The first and second |premolars |(bicuspids) are located between the |canines| and the |molars |(tricuspids). The crown of each premolar features two raised prominences (cusps) which facilitate the grinding and chewing of food (hence the term "bicuspid"). The premolars are not represented in deciduous (non-permanent) |teeth|, but are permanent |teeth| which erupt (come in) once the child approaches nine or ten years of age. The premolar roots feature single root stems which anchor them in the |maxilla| and |mandible|, similar to the incisors and |canines|.
